Is it possible if I already have a flight through American to change it to a totally different airline ?

my job is going to training in Miami and since Southwest doesnt fly there we have to fly American. I would rather fly Southwest to Ft Lauderdale. Is there a way I can change this? The ticket has already been paid for by my job. Could I at least fly back on Southwest?
