I have a +12VDC solenoid but don't know which wire is positive and negative?

I have a small solenoid and all I know is that it requires +12VDC to make it work. The two wires coming out from the solenoid coil are of same color, how do I know which wire is positive and negative? also, can I do simple test by connecting it to a 12VDC source? Thanks.
