What is the whole story line of Zelda?

B/c every game they seem to change characters as link all the time, excluding a few like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Does the legend of the hero p on from person to person, or does link reincarnate or what. I never understood. I would appreciate if someone started with the first zelda and ended with the last/most recent.
